PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was indicted in a deadly shooting at a Mother’s Day cookout in Providence.

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office said Thursday that a jury returned an indictment charging Luis Sepulveda with first-degree murder and illegal gun charges.

Police said 44-year-old Angel Rodriguez was killed in a shooting at a cookout with his fiancé’s family on Manton Avenue around 11 p.m. on May 14.

Authorities said Sepulveda brought a friend with him to the party who did not get along with Rodriguez.

The men argued throughout the night, ending with Sepulveda firing several shots into the air on his way out, hitting Rodriguez.

Rodriguez later died at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police on scene launched a search for a Dodge Caravan with North Carolina plates initially believed to have fled the scene.

People at the party told police that a group of people were waiting for Sepulveda in a van parked outside the house and didn’t know what happened.

Police said Sepulveda is from Rhode Island. He may have also lived in North Carolina and New York.

Sepulveda has a lengthy criminal record that dates back to the 1990s.

He is set to be arraigned next Tuesday in Providence County Superior Court.
