PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Officials in Southern New England are asking the public to stay alert on Friday after a former Hamas official called for an “global day of jihad.”

The Rhode Island State Police said it is “stepping up its presence” to keep the public safe.

The Massachusetts state police gave a similar statement, and said that it is maintaining a “constant vigilance and a consistently high state of readiness to rapidly respond to developing threats, critical incidents, and requests for assistance.”

Both organizations said that there have been no credible threats made against the public in either state.

Sen. Jack Reed also asked members of the public to be vigilant, and to report anything they think may be a threat to local law enforcement.

“We should pay attention, if anyone sees anything suspicious they should call the police,” Reed said. “I think that Americans are not going to respond to a radical call from these killers to do anything serious, I hope not.”
