North Attleborough expecting additional migrants at town hotel
NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, Mass. (WLNE) — After already housing roughly 80 migrants at the town’s Best Western, North Attleborough is expecting more families seeking shelter to come to their doorstep.
Town councilman Mark Gould told ABC 6 News the migrants take up 10 rooms of the hotel off Route 1.
“It justifiably rubs people the wrong way,” said Gould.
Many of the migrants include families and children.
Gould added, “We have school representatives coming and asking, ‘Hey, are you in school? Should you be in school? How old are you?’ We are using Google translate to find out basic needs that should be communicated.”
Monday morning, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said the state was reaching it’s maximum capacity for emergency shelters. Much of this, Healey says, is driven by migrant families.
Both Healey and Gould called for the federal government to step in.
“We have a housing crisis here,” said Gould. “Now, the federal, state government is pushing this down… It’s already a crisis.”
North Attleborough is uncertain how long the migrants will stay at the Best Western hotel.
