North Smithfield man accused of drunk driving in deadly pedestrian crash

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A North Smithfield man is accused of drunk driving after a pedestrian was killed and another was hurt in a crash on Wednesday night.
Rhode Island State Police said Nicholas Stone, 25, faces several charges including DUI, driving to endanger resulting in death, and duty to stop in accident resulting in death.
The agency said troopers and North Smithfield police and fire departments were called to a report of a pedestrian crash on Route 146 north at about 9:40 p.m.
Police said 63-year-old Thomas Lamoureux and another man were walking southbound in the right shoulder of Route 146 when they were both struck by a BMW sedan.

Lamoureux died on scene. The second victim had serious injuries and was brought to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is stable.
The BMW took off and hit a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority van before it was found in the parking lot of a Walmart store on Dowling Village Boulevard.
Police identified Stone as the driver.
Officers reported that he had “obvious” signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests.
He was taken into custody and treated at Landmark Hospital in Woonsocket.
Stone was held overnight pending his arraignment.
