24-hour Law Enforcement Torch Run walk benefits Special Olympics Rhode Island
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — Members of Law Enforcement Torch Run took part in a 24-hour walk benefitting Special Olympics Rhode Island over the weekend.
Participants walked for 24 hours straight, starting in Warwick City Park Saturday and concluding at Bryant University Sunday.
“All the amazing members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run community came together to raise awareness and support for Special Olympics Rhode Island,” Special Olympics Rhode Island President and CEO Ed Pacheco said. “Most importantly for the athletes of Special Olympics Rhode Island, what an incredible group of individuals.”
Director of Marketing and Communications Dawn Ratté said that over $10,000 was raised for the organization by the walk, as well as by six- and 12-hour walks that happened simultaneously.
“I’m not sure I could stay awake for 24 hours straight, so the idea to walk 24 hours to accomplish those goals is pretty impressive,” Pacheco said.
Special Olympics Rhode Island said it puts on year-round sports training and competitions for over 3,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
