Teenager hurt in accident at haunted hayride in Smithfield

SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A 14-year-old girl was seriously hurt after an accident with a tractor at a Smithfield farm over the weekend.

The Smithfield High School student was hurt in an accident with a tractor towing a wagon on Saturday night while working as a scare actor at the haunted hayride at Seven Cedars Farm.

St. Michael’s Church in Smithfield posted a message on its Facebook page, asking the community to pray for the teenager.

Smithfield Schools Superintendent Dawn Bartz said she met with her and her family at the hospital the morning after the incident.

“She is very strong and brave,” Bartz said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

She said fellow students and community members witnessed the accident.

Students in need of support are encouraged to speak to counselors at Smithfield High School and other schools in the district.

In the wake of the incident, the farm shut down its haunted hayride for the rest of the season.

“We are completely heartbroken over this and we hope she has a speedy recovery,” the farm shared on social media.

All tickets purchased for Sunday were refunded.
