Fall River Diocese to close two schools

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– The Fall River Diocese announced today that it will close two area Catholic schools, citing financial impact from COVID-19.
Cassidy Middle and High School in Taunton and St. Margaret Primary School in Buzzards Bay will close at the end of this semester, according to a statement the diocese released Wednesday evening.
Fall River Diocese Bishop Edgar Moreira da Cunha said the decision was made “with a heavy heart”, but insisted the state had other options for Catholic school students.
“By consolidating our resources and bringing students together in these schools, we can continue to provide high quality Christ-centered education for all of our students,” da Cunha said.
The diocese had been helping to cover budget shortfalls at the schools, but that is no longer sustainable in the wake of COVID-19, the statement said.
“While we sincerely regret having to close any of our Catholic schools, the ultimate goal is to strengthen all remaining schools to ensure Catholic education is available for many years to come,” said Superintendent Stephen Perla.
Cassidy students will be able to transfer to Our Lady of Lourdes in Taunton, while St. Margaret’s students will have a choice between three other primary schools on Cape Cod.
