Less than 20% of voters hit the polls for Rhode Island CD1 special election
Democrat Gabe Amo and Republican Gerry Leonard go head-to-head to represent the 1st Congressional District.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Roughly 18% of voters made it to the polls as of 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, after a slow start to election day in Rhode Island’s 1st Congressional District.
According to the Rhode Island Secretary of State, Gregg Amore, 51,293 voters took to the polls Tuesday, 6,179 voters submitted mail-in ballots and 15,904 voters cast their vote early.
The total turnout in the state as of 7:30 p.m. was 73,376, or 18% of registered voters.

Both Democrat Gabe Amo and Republican Gerry Leonard have been busy campaigning for their chance to fill former Rep. David Cicilline’s seat.
Cicilline was re-elected this time last year and resigned earlier this year to become CEO of the Rhode Island Foundation.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
