PROVIDENCE, RI (WLNE) – Providence police responded to Linwood Avenue Monday night after a carjacker stole a vehicle with a 5-year-old child inside.
Police said the child’s uncle pulled over on Linwood Avenue around 5:30 p.m. to briefly stop inside a nearby location, leaving his 16-year-old son in the front seat of the car and his 5-year-old nephew in the back seat.
Police said the 16-year-old then got out of the car after seeing somebody he knew.
He was about eight feet from the car talking to his friend when a carjacker got into the blue BMW and drove away heading towards Cranston street with the 5-year-old still in the back seat.
According to police, five to seven minutes later the carjacker ditched the vehicle on Potters Avenue and Ninigrant Street, where officers found the child safe inside.
Providence officers contacted the parents and reunited the child with his family.
Police have not yet made an arrest and have not released details about the suspect.
