PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The city of Providence has begun phase two for construction plans on the Allens Avenue barrier sewer grates.

The construction is part of the $3 million American Rescue Plan investment into the ARPA Revenue Recovery investment plan.

The Allens Avenue sewer gates usually only close amid severe weather to prevent flooding. The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier protects 280 acres of downtown.

The first phase of construction was over the summer.

Phase two will be a complete replacement of the hydraulic gate operators, which will bring Allens Avenue to one lane of traffic in each direction around the work zones located at the street gate.

With construction starting this week, city officials said it should be complete by early December.
