PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — One person is in the hospital and three others are displaced after a fire in an apartment building on Cranston Street in Providence Tuesday night.

According to Battalion Chief Joe Paiva, crews were called to the Aaron Briggs Manor apartments around 6 p.m. and were met with smoke and fire in a third floor unit.

Battalion Chief Paiva said there was one woman in the apartment at the time of the fire. Firefighters entered the apartment and took her to safety.

She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for evaluation but her condition was not immediately known.

Paiva explained that the sprinkler system in the apartment was functional and put out a majority of the fire but crews supplies water from a hose out of an abundance of caution.

The apartment where the fire started has been deemed uninhabitable and some neighboring apartments sustained light water damage.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
