URI Head Football Coach Jim Fleming Defends Former Player, Patriots Kicker Justin Rohrwasser
In an interview with ABC6 News, University of Rhode Island head football coach Jim Fleming defended the character of new Patriots kicker Justin Rohrwasser. You can hear his uncut comments in the video above.
“I would stand on the table to validate that this is a good kid,” Felming told ABC6.
After Rohrwasser was drafted, there were multiple social media posts pointing out a tattoo on his arm. The tattoo was the logo of the “Three Percenters”, a controversial anti-government extremist group.
“I don’t even recall the tattoo in question,” Fleming said.
“I would dismiss all of that garbage that you start hearing on social media about this kid… He is a quality human being.”
When Fleming was asked if Rohrwasser had any issues with teammates of other races or background, Fleming responded,
“He was a loved kid on our football team. They were sorry to see him go,” referring to Rohrwasser’s transfer from URI to Marshall, the school he finished his college career at.
Fleming did mention that Rohrwasser would wear “Make America Great Again” hats around the team’s facilities.
“We’d have some significant conversations about whether (or not) I wanted to see that hat in the building,” Fleming explained.
“The bottom line is, he was a very informed, intelligent human being. He had great relationships with all kids.”
Rohrwasser told WBZ-TV in Boston Monday he would have the tattoo removed. He told other reporters on a conference call Saturday that he would have it covered.
“I would assume the Patriots vetted the thing as much as they possibly could and feel comfortable with it.
