Johnston chase ends in officer-involved shooting in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Johnston police said there was a shooting involving one of its officers in Providence early Monday.
The shooting happened after a police chase around 1:50 a.m. in the area of Unit and Maynard streets in Providence.
Before the chase, North Providence police sent out a BOLO for a silver GMC Savana in connection to a shooting in Providence.
A Johnston police officer saw the suspect vehicle minutes later. The officer followed the vehicle on Newman Avenue in Johnston and chased it into Providence, on Manton Avenue to Chalkstone Avenue.
The pursuit ended in the area of Unit and Maynard streets, where the vehicle stopped and two people got out and took off on foot.
The officer chased after them, when police say one fired multiple rounds. The officer fired back, and it’s unknown if either of them were hit.
The officer, who’s name was not released, was not injured.
Law enforcement is actively looking to identify both suspects.
Johnson police and state police are investigating the officer-involved shooting in accordance with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s protocol.
