Son arraigned for allegedly shooting, killing father in Wareham

WAREHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — A Wareham man pleaded not guilty Tuesday after he allegedly shot his father to death.

According to Tim Cruz, the Plymouth County District Attorney, Robert Gomes III was arraigned on one count each of murder, firearm-armed assault to murder a person 60 or over, assault and battery with a firearm, possession of a firearm without an FID card, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

On Monday, November 27, at approximately 3:35 p.m., Wareham police received several 911 calls, including an allegedly call from the suspect, reporting that a shooting had occurred at 1146 Main St.

When first responders arrived to the scene, they said they found a man, identified as 61-year-old Robert Gomes Jr., outside on the back porch steps suffering from gunshot wounds to his chest. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

After an investigation by the Plymouth County DA’s Office and Massachusetts State Police, a black duffle bag with a ghost gun inside and several bullet casings were recovered.

A warrant was later issued for the arrest of Gomes III and he was taken into custody.

Gomes III is expected to returned to court on Dec. 27, 2023.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing by Mass. State police and Wareham police.
