Mount Hope Bridge reopens after head-on crash

BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — Portsmouth police are investigating a head-on crash on the Mount Hope Bridge on Wednesday morning.

Portsmouth officers received a call for a two-car crash on the bridge at about 5:40 a.m.

A white ford SUV, initially going south toward Portsmouth, veered into the northbound lanes.

The SUV directly collided with a blue Jeep SUV traveling northbound toward Bristol.

Both drivers were brought to nearby hospitals with minor injuries.

Emergency crews from Portsmouth and Bristol and the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority responded to the scene.

Traffic in both communities was temporarily disrupted. The bridge reopened shortly after 7 a.m.

Police had asked drivers to avoid the area and take different routes for their morning commute.

The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.
