SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The South Kingstown Police Department are warning the public about a phone scam affecting Rhode Islanders.

Police said the scam deals with a supposed missed court date or money owed to prevent an arrest.

The caller in the scam claims to be a South Kingstown police officer and instructs the intended victim how to make a payment for missing court or to avoid arrest for outstanding fines or fees.

“No member of the South Kingstown Police Department or any other police department will ever call asking for money,” Chief Matthew Moynihan said. “These fraudsters can be compelling, but please do not fall for their scam.”

The calls have been reported in Burrillville, Charlestown, and South Kingstown.
