Study finds Rhode Island is #2 state for ‘porch pirates’ in the U.S.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A new study from Lombardo Homes says Rhode Island is the number two state in the country for “porch pirates.”
According to the United States Postal Service, they processes and deliver 23.8 million packages each day, not including Amazon packages or parcels shipped through other services like USPS or FedEx.
According to Lombardo Homes’ study, 34% of Americans say they’ve had a package stolen, and the average value of those stolen packages totals $219.
The study further explains that 54% of those Americans had a package stolen during the holiday season, and 35% installed a new security system or doorbell camera after the thefts.
Officials say that between August 2022 and December 2022, Google searches for “porch pirates” increased 236%. Google searches for “what to do if package was stolen” also increased 140%.
Some solutions to porch piracy the study offered include tracking the shipments through the delivery process. Other ways include staying home to receive the package, signing up for delivery alerts or installing security cameras where you have your packages delivered.
