Third Period Goals Lift #8 UMass Over #10 PC Friday

AMHERST, Mass. – Michael Lackey made 33 saves, but a pair of goals from Niko Hildenbrand in the third period lifted No. 8 UMass to a 3-1 win over the No. 10 Providence College men’s hockey team on Friday night at the Mullins Center.

– The Friars surrendered the opening goal for the fourth consecutive game as Reed Lebster put the Minutemen up 1-0 at 5:32 of the first period.
– Providence was outshot 17-3 in the opening 20 minutes.
– Lackey stood tall in the middle frame, stopping all 14 shots including multiple highlight-reel saves.
– Matt Koopman leveled the score at 14:46 of the second with his fifth of the season. Jack Dugan and Max Crozier earned the assists on the play.
– Hildenbrand’s pair of goals in a span of 2:32 gave the Minutemen a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
– Tyce Thompson’s point streak of eight games was snapped on Friday night.
– Dugan added to his NCAA-leading point total (45) with an assist on Matt Koopman’s goal in the second period.
– Providence suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season.
