Cumberland police end silver alert after missing man’s car found on fire

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cumberland Police Department said it ended the silver alert put out for a missing man after his car was found on fire late Friday night.
93-year-old Fredrick Mumford was last seen on Scott Road in Cumberland around 9:30 p.m. He is five foot 10 inches tall, has white hair, and was last seen wearing a dark jacket and dark jeans.
Chief Matthew Benson said that the department was able to triangulate the location of Mumford’s car to Hopkinton, where it was found to be engulfed in flames.
Benson added that a body was found outside the vehicle at the same time, and identification of it is still underway.
The department said that Mumford was believed to be endangered due to physical/mental health issues.
Benson said the silver alert has been cancelled and the incident is under investigation. Mumford’s family has also been informed of the incident.
