New Bedford man now facing OUI, manslaughter charges for November crash

NEW BEDFORD, M.A. (WLNE) – A New Bedford man is set to appear before a judge for the first time Friday, in connection to a November crash that resulted in the death of a Dartmouth father.
Initially, Juan Castro, 27, of New Bedford, was not charged for causing the fatal accident, but now he’s expected to be charged with manslaughter while operating under the influence of alcohol, and motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol, when he is arraigned Friday.
Castro is currently being held without bail in connection to a crash on November 13, that claimed the life of 39-year-old David Dos Santos of Dartmouth.
According to court documents, Castro was nearly three times over the legal limit when his car collided with the vehicle Dos Santos was driving.
The crash happened just before 1:30 AM at the intersection of Kempton St. and Brownell Ave. in New Bedford.
Surveillance video shows Castro was speeding and ran a red light before hitting Dos Santos.
The state Medical Examiner’s office determined Dos Santos died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest. He leaves behind two young daughters.
Prosecutors are also seeking a dangerousness hearing in this case, where Castro could be held up to four months without bail.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
