NEW BEDFORD M.A. (WLNE) – Irene Miller marches to the beat of her own drum.
“Irene has a three finger shot of bourbon before she goes to bed, and she sleeps just fine” says Shirley Antil, Lieutenant Director at New Bedford’s Active Day Adult Care.
So it is safe to say that for Miller, whose 110th birthday is later this month, marching to the beat of her own drum seems to be working for her.
“Irene is a light, she’s never upset she’s just a happy person” Antil explains.
Throughout Miller’s 109 years, it’s safe to say she’s seen a lot. But being a life-long New Bedford native, her favorite memory is seeing or listening to the Red Sox win the World Series, eight times.
“That’s my team! I like the way they play ball” Miller says.
Her favorite player, Babe Ruth, who she remembers following as far back as 1915.
Irene didn’t start coming to Active Day until just a few years ago when she was 107. The workers say, she soon became the life of the party.
“She’s everybody’s grandmother here, she’s a bright light for everybody” Antil adds. “110 is such a milestone so she needs to be recognized. I want everyone to feel what we’re able to feel” Antil says.
Now, the center is asking people to send Miller cards, saying all she wants’ for her birthday is to feel loved. “”Don’t worry about tomorrow. Wait until it comes.”
If you would like to send Irene Miller a cad for her birthday, send or drop it off to Active Day of New Bedford at 107 Welby Rd, New Bedford, MA 02745.
