Data breach at Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility data breach affects inmates, staff

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) — The Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility said that a November data breach that affected the facility’s computer systems affected over 2,000 inmates, staff, and outside vendors.

The facility said a virus impacted the systems, and the facility “quickly took steps to minimize its impact” and has been working with a forensic security expert to determine the extent of the impact.

The facility released a statement that said that the investigation had identified 1,454 detainees, 438 current and former staff, and 92 outside vendors affected by the breach.

“At this time, we believe that various types of data were taken from the facility’s systems and posted on the dark web, including certain financial information, certain detainees’ medical information, certain current and former staff information, and certain vendor information,” a statement read. “Some of this information included names, home addresses, personal home/cellphone numbers, birth dates, hire dates, job titles, and in some, but not all, instances, Social Security numbers.”

The statement added added the facility is “committed to helping minimize any possible impact” from the incident and impacted individuals are being notified and will be offered free credit monitoring.
