Former Acting New Bedford Fire Chief killed in police shooting

FAIRHAVEN, Mass (WLNE) – An Acushnet Police Officer was injured, and former acting New Bedford Fire Chief Paul Coderre was killed during a standoff Friday night in Fairhaven.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, 55-year-old Paul Coderre, of Dartmouth, had been drinking at the Bayside Lounge on Sconticut Neck Road before getting into an altercation inside the establishment. Coderre left the bar and was attempting to get into his vehicle when someone tried to stop him from driving.
Police from Fairhaven, Acushnet and Mattapoisett responded to the scene. Officials attempted to deescalate and speak with Coderre, who was armed with a firearm. During the incident police made multiple non-lethal attempts to subdue Coderre before he fired his handgun. Police then returned fire and killed Coderre.
During the incident an Acushnet Police officer was shot in the leg and transported to Saint Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. He has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office is continuing to investigate this incident.
