CHEPACHET, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has announced that it will be hosting its eighth annual hike to celebrate New Year’s Day.

The 1.5-mile hike organized by the DEM will be held at George Washington State Campground in Chepachet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, January 1.

Officials say commemorative pins and popcorn will be available to participants while supplies last. Local Girl Scout Troops will also be selling hot chocolate.

Children who attend must be accompanied by an adult. The trail is also jogging and stroller-friendly, according to the DEM.

Leashed dogs are allowed, so long as the leash is no more than six feet long.

The walk will be held rain or shine, so the DEM is encouraging participants to dress accordingly.

Officials are asking anyone looking to extend their hike outside the set route to wear solid fluorescent orange to be visible to any potential hunters in the area.
