A Wish Come True Polar Plunge to support Disney trips for two kids
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — The annual “A Wish Come True” Polar Plunge in Newport is funding Disney trips for two Rhode Island children.
The traditional run into the ocean at Easton’s Beach was at noon on Monday.
The “A Wish Come True” program raises money to benefit children facing life-threatening illnesses.
“We are freezing for a reason. It may be chilly out here but it warms your heart to be here,” said Jeffrey Massey, presenting sponsor.
Going into the day, the organization said they already raised $58,000.
“The money goes directly to help support wishes. Last year we did 43 wishes and the year before that we did 19 wishes. There is quite a growth and quite a need, we can’t do it without the support of our community,” said Mary-Kate O’Leary, executive director of “A Wish Come True.”
This year, the plunge will benefit 6-year-old Sofia from Warwick and 16-year-old Graciela from West Kingston.
They both wished to go to Florida to see Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld.
For one girl in attendance, she experienced “A Wish Come True” trip in the past, and returned to the plunge to support the cause.
“It was really, really fun. I loved it! I am really happy for the two girls who are going. The hotel is great, they are going to love it. The hotel is so great, I am just so happy for them,” said Mariana Myers of Warren.
