4 arrested during ‘violent altercation’ at high school basketball game in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A “violent altercation” at Mount Pleasant High School resulted in dozens of police responding and four arrests on Thursday.

Providence police told an ABC 6 News crew on scene that the police detail at a game against Narragansett High School noticed a “large disturbance” around halftime.

Police arrested two adults and two juveniles after a brawl. A firearm was also located on scene.

On Friday, Providence police confirmed the names of the two adults arrested. 18-year-old Randy Espinall and 18-year-old Luis DeJesus both face disorderly conduct charges. The two juveniles arrested were also charged with disorderly conduct.

Police said they are reviewing surveillance video from the incident. The game was also allowed to continue but spectators were asked to leave.

Providence Public Schools Chief of Communications released the following statement:

We are aware that there was an incident between adult and student spectators this evening during the Mount Pleasant versus Narragansett basketball game at Mount Pleasant High School. The details are still unfolding. The safety of our students and families is our utmost priority. The Providence Police Department responded to the incident and the Providence Public School District is working closely with them.

State Rep. David Morales said in a social media post that “over a dozen” police cruisers were dispatched to the scene.
