Man arrested after armed robbery at Warwick bank
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Warwick police arrested a man after an armed robbery and high-speed chase on Friday night.
Police allege 38-year-old Roy Mangum, a city resident, robbed the TD Bank on West Shore Road before fleeing and crashing his vehicle.
Around 5:50 p.m., police received reports that a man walked into the bank, armed with a handgun, and demanded money from the teller.
Police allege Mangum jumped over the counter, grabbed approximately $5,000 out of the cash drawer, and fled the area in a black pick-up truck.
Police said they were responding to the bank for the robbery report when they spotted the suspect vehicle driving north on Warwick Ave.
Officers said they attempted to stop the vehicle, but Mangum fled and led them on a chase onto Airport Road, where he struck another vehicle at the intersection of Post Road.
Police then arrested Mangum. He was taken to the hospital to be checked for minor injuries.
Police said the driver and passengers of the second vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
Police said Mangum will be held on the following charges:
- First Degree Robbery
- Carrying a dangerous weapon when committing a crime of violence
- Possession of a firearm by persons convicted of crime of violence
- Eluding an officer at high speed
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has any other information related to the incident to call them as they continue to investigate.
