PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Southern New England is bracing for heavy wind and rain Tuesday following the weekend snowstorm.

Rhode Island Energy said the storm may cause damage to the electrical system, with winds of over 60 miles per hour and rainfall between 2 and 4 inches.

The storm is expected to move away from New England by Wednesday afternoon.

“These wind forecasts that could last an extended period of time are a bit concerning with this storm. Couple that with significant rainfall on an already oversaturated ground, and we know that there will be outages,” said Dave Bonenberger, president of Rhode Island Energy.

“For that reason, we are preparing accordingly and have secured hundreds of additional line and forestry workers to assist with the restoration efforts,” he said.

Rhode Islanders can report power outages online or by calling 855-743-1102.

Drivers were warned to always assume that a downed wire is live, and to stay clear.

Those who rely on public water systems or well pumps should keep a supply of bottled water as well as non-perishable food items.

Officials said to prepare for widespread power outages by charging devices and keeping flashlights and batteries handy.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley also said to be cautious and avoid areas with flooding.

The town of Westerly added that residents should secure any outdoor furniture and decorations.

The public was advised to never go into the water during a storm, or stand on rocks at the coast.
