Concerns for sharks being more active at beaches this summer

CAPE COD, M.A. (WLNE) – New concerns for sharks being more active patrolling beach waters this summer.

This is particularly concerning as we head into the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Officials on Cape Cod think sharks are coming close enough to the shore to be a big concern for swimmers.

Greg Skomal, MA Division of Marine Fisheries said, “You’ve got predatory shark called the white shark that’s coming in very close to shore to feed on a growing population of seals. There should be a higher level of vigilance when it comes to getting in the water because of this this predator prey relationship.”

Volunteer pilots are now flying over beaches to radio-in shark sightings.

Officials are also using an App called Sharktivity to track shark sightings and signals up and down the coast.
