K9 finds illegal gun tossed in woods after alleged assault

RISP K9 Annie assisted in locating the discarded firearm

An illegal gun is off the streets thanks to a State Police K9.

Rhode Island State Trooper Lisa Hanley  and her partner, K9 Annie, were called to help with an investigation in Coventry Thursday. Police thought an assault suspect had tossed an illegal gun into the woods near Dave’s Marketplace, but officers weren’t able to find it.

K9 Annie got right to work, and within a half hour, she found the gun officers were searching for.

“For them its just their playtime, but for me, I know the reality that she just found this firearm which if a child could’ve been passing through that pathway and located it…it could’ve been pretty dangerous for them,” said Trooper Hanley.

K9 Annie’s been on the job for 6 years. She not only helps with investigations, but also with bomb threats at schools and security sweeps for big events – like games at Gillette Stadium.
