Man accused of stealing packages after tailing Amazon truck

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE): A man was caught on camera stealing packages from a mailroom after neighbors say he tailed an Amazon truck to steal the just-delivered packages.

Tom Yaz’s neighbor said his package was stolen, so Yaz and others who live in the condominium complex on Bernon Street in Woonsocket immediately checked the surveillance camera in the mailroom.

“We saw the Amazon delivery and then looked at the surveillance camera in the parking lot and saw a car tailing the Amazon truck,” Yaz said. “This person comes in the building right after the Amazon truck.”

In the video, a man in a blue shirt is seen opening one of the mailboxes, then stealing one of the packages and walking away.

The video also captured an Amazon truck leaving just a few seconds before the man in the blue shirt came in, which is why he and his neighbors believe the suspect had been following the truck.

“Only a few steps behind the Amazon truck, so these drivers have to be aware of people tailing them,” Yaz said. “That’s how people shop during a pandemic. People don’t go into stores, so you use Amazon, you rely on these necessities.”

Yaz said he wouldn’t be surprised if this was happening to others in his neighborhood.

The Woonsocket Police Department said they are aware of this incident, but have not received a formal complaint.

“No arrests have been made but we continue to monitor and follow-up.” Deputy Chief Michael Lemoine said.

ABC6 News also reached out to a spokesperson from Amazon:

  • Safety is Amazon’s top priority and we regularly reinforce that nothing is more important than the safety of the driver. The vast majority of deliveries make it to our customers without issue, when something does occur, drivers can contact our driver support teams, or in the case of emergencies, drivers are instructed to immediately call 911 for support.
