BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE)- A 56-year-old Providence man succumbed to injuries Wednesday afternoon after attempting to rescue three teenagers from a rip current in Bristol.

Police said Hoen Chin had planned on spending the day with family and friends at Narrows Point off Harrison Street, an area witnesses said he was familiar with.

At some point during the outing, three teenagers had entered the water and were swept up in a strong rip current.

According to police, Chin entered the water in an attempt to rescue the teens, and was caught up in the currents himself.

The three teenagers were able to make it back to the shore by themselves.

A bystander was able to reach Chin and pull him to shore after he had been in the water between five and 10 minutes, Bristol Police Capt. Brian Burke said in a statement.

Bystanders performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived and took over life-saving procedures.

Chin was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
