Full interview: Maite Uzal on role in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ at PPAC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Broadway classic “Fiddler on the Roof” is at the Providence Performing Arts Center this week.

The musical tells the story of family and tradition by chronicling the lives of a Jewish family in Russia during the early 1900s–as the world changes and customs evolves.

The show takes the audience through so many emotions, from laughter to tears–with songs like “Tradition,” “Sunrise Sunset” and “If I Were a Rich Man.”

I sat down with actress Maite Uzal, who plays Golde in the production, who spoke about the gamut of emotions that the characters–and audience–experience.

“Literally people know my lines and my songs. I think it’s a great gift because Golde goes through every single emotion that you could imagine,” said Uzal. “It’s the constant laugh, cry, laugh, cry and the way that a lot of times Jewish people have such a sense of humor in handling a sad situation.”

Uzal added that she feels that the themes of the show are more relevant than ever these days.

“Fiddler on the Roof” runs now through Sunday at PPAC.
