Parents to protest proposed plan to restructure Coventry elementary schools
COVENTRY, R.I. (WLNE) — Parents are set to protest a proposed plan to turn Coventry elementary schools into split schools on Monday afternoon.
A “save the bees” rally is planned for 1 p.m. outside Blackrock Elementary School.
The proposed plan would create consolidated schools in the district.
It has caused outrage among parents in the district who do not want to send their children to a new school.
Parents cited issues like larger class sizes, longer commutes, with all students now at a centralized location instead of going to the closest school to your neighborhood, among other concerns.
A school board meeting last week reportedly discussed the restructuring of the schools, infuriating parents in the district who claim they weren’t notified of the meeting.
The proposed plan would go into effect within the next few years, moving students at Blackrock Elementary to a different school.
