Some Cumberland residents likely in the dark a few more days

The hum of generators was a common sound in several Cumberland neighborhoods Wednesay evening.

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) – Thousands of Rhode Islanders are still in the dark Wednesday night and some will have to wait a few days longer than others for the power to come back on.

The hum of generators was a common sound in several Cumberland neighborhoods Wednesay evening.

“Tried to get a generator today – there’s obviously nothing available,” said resident Matt Regan.

This comes after residents lost power Tuesday night from Tropical Storm Isaias. Many in the neighborhoods we spoke with aren’t supposed to get power back until Friday or Saturday.

“We were kind of hoping it would be back on this morning,” said Regan. “But it didn’t come on so now we’ve got to throw everything out in the fridge.”

Little Pond County Road was shut down during the day Wednesday – not because there was a downed tree, but to keep some branches that had come down from causing any further outages.

“Hope everyone stays safe, and hoping for the best that these times are sooner than they’re saying,” said Jacob Guajardo of National Grid’s estimated restoration times.

The Guajardos live nextdoor and have been using a generator for their elderly mother on oxygen and to keep their dog cool.

“Grandmother needs the oxygen. The bulldog needs the cold air. And the refrigerator needs to be on for the kids,” said Guajardo. “As long as grandma’s okay, as long as the bull dog’s okay, we’re going to be fine.”

We did reach out to National Grid about why some places may take days longer for restoration and a spokesperson said in part: “We prioritize the largest amount of customers that can get their power back on in the shortest amount of time.”
