Woman alleviates $44.9M of medical debt for 51,000 Northeasterners

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Brooklyn woman has abolished $44.9M in medical debt for 51,000 people in nine states, including Rhode Island.

Casey McIntyre, 38, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away in November from a long battle with ovarian cancer.

McIntyre announced her own death on her X account in Nov. 2023.

She said in a thread on X, “to celebrate my life, I’ve arranged to buy up others’ medical debt and then destroy the debt.”

McIntyre raised over a million dollars, surpassing the $20,000 goal.

The first round of relief will use over $300,000 of the funds to abolish $44.9 million dollars of debt for people in the Northeast, where McIntyre started her family.

Letters to those impacted by this debt relief have been sent out.

“I will feel abjectly unlucky for the rest of my life that my wife Casey McIntyre was diagnosed with Stage Four Ovarian Cancer at age 34.” McIntyre’s widow Andrew Rose Gregory shared.

He added, “But as we traveled together through the hellscape that is cancerworld, we realized that our medical coverage made our path so much easier than so many. Cancer patients across our nation are postponing care, refusing care, or taking on an enormous sum of medical debt because of their lack of coverage.”

The viral campaign “Casey McIntrye’s Memorial & Debt Jubilee” is on behalf of RIP Medical Debt.
