FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (WLNE) – Firefighters spent several hours battling a fire on Fort Street early Saturday.

Fairhaven Fire Department responded to a residence at 104 Fort Street around 12:50 a.m. Saturday for reports of a 1-room fire.

Crews on scene discovered a fire confined to a second-floor bedroom of the residence, causing smoke, heat and water damage to the home.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire. Officials said one family cat escaped the fire but another had to be resuscitated by firefighters using a Pet Oxygen Mask recently donated to the department.

The cat was later transferred to Swansea, Mass. pet emergency room for additional treatment.

Fire Officials said the fire caused approximately $40,000 in damage to the home, mostly due to smoke. The home did have a working and monitored fire alarm system, the Fire department said, but several detectors on the second floor and stairway had been disabled due to recent malfunctions.

Fairhaven Fire Department urged homeowners to repair or replace broken detectors immediately to be prepared for potential fires.
