New Bedford prepares for winter storm, makes sand available to residents

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) – The city of New Bedford has already completed the bulk of its preparations in advance of Tuesday’s winter storm.
Mayor Jon Mitchell announced on Monday that a citywide parking ban will take effect at midnight and remain in effect for 48 hours, unless lifted or further extended.
The mayor’s office also advised that all city offices will be closed Tuesday and said there will be a one-day delay of residential trash collection for the rest of the week.
Notably, in addition to the advisories, the city has arranged several locations for residents to collect free sand for their driveways and walkways.
Officials say residents can bring their own small container to collect the sand at any of the following locations:
- Corner of Liberty Street and Smith Street
- Brooklawn Park parking lot, next to Brooklawn Senior Center
- Parking lot at 773 South 1st Street, across from Dennison Memorial Community Center.
In addition, the New Bedford school district announced they will be closed tomorrow due to the inclement weather.
