RI blood center issues urgent need for donors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Blood Center is issuing an urgent need for donors after Tuesday’s storm resulted in the closure of all donor centers.

The closure resulted in the loss of nearly 400 donations for the day.

“This is the first time in several years that a weather event has forced the full closure of all donor
activities at RIBC which will have a tremendous impact on the local blood supply,” said Beau
Tompkins, Vice President of Rhode Island Blood Center. “I am personally asking that
everyone roll up their sleeves and come out to donate when safe so we can ensure there will be
blood on the shelves for patients to receive lifesaving treatment.”

The RIBC is worried that with school vacation next week, they may be hitting a one-two punch in donations.

The blood center added that they have seen a 50% decline in youth donors which account for 25% of the blood supply.

RIBC is urging everyone to donate at last once per season this year. They are also asking that those who had to cancel today to please rebook their next appointment.

To make an appointment call (401) 453-8383 or visit ribc.org.
