Steward Healthcare may have interest in leaving Massachusetts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Steward Healthcare is considering leaving Massachusetts after a letter from Governor Maura Healey suggesting it transfer its local hospitals to new operators.

The Dallas-based company says that they are only interested in selling some of its assets, but is willing to meet with Healey’s team in person.

Steward reportedly owes $50 million in unpaid rent, and operates nine hospitals in Massachusetts and employs more than 15,000 medical professionals.

A statement from Steward reads “The state has repeatedly made plain that it prefers other – very often larger and more expensive – hospital systems.”
