Providence proposes noise monitoring cameras

Providence, RI. (Kyle Ramsden)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley is proposing that noise monitoring cameras be installed within the city’s limits.

According to Spokesperson of the Mayor Smiley’s office Josh Estrella, excessive noise is one of the top complaints reported.

The noise ordinance has been in place for years but has been rarely enforced, the Mayor’s office shared.

The proposed legislation will allow the city to enforce the already existing ordinance with this technology.

Traffic cameras would be utilized for noise violations only.

If the legislation passes, the city will undergo a procurement process before the cameras are implemented.

Estrella shared that the city expects the cameras to be distributed throughout the city, but the decision will not be made until passing legislation and procurement.
