Man arrested after 7 hour standoff at Hyannis home

HYANNIS, Mass. (WLNE) — The Barnstable Police Department said that officers and Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team members arrested a man after a seven hour standoff after he barricaded himself into his house.

30-year-old Justin Moreira was charged with several accounts of attempted murder as well as firearms charges.

The department said that officers were called to a home on St. Francis Circle around 8 a.m. for reports of a person holding another individual at knifepoint.

The person being held was released before police arrived, but the suspect remained in his home, where he was contained by police.

Cape Cod SWAT members took over command of the situation, and the suspect fired at police several times throughout the day, including at a robotic dog that was deployed into the house to find him.

After seven hours of unsuccessful negotiation, police said they deployed pepper spray as well as a specialty ballistic vehicle to “forcibly encourage’ Moreira to exit the home and place him under arrest.

The department added that a shelter in place was sent out for a one-mile radius from the incident location and homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated.

The Barnstable Chief of Police later told local school administrators that there was no danger to any students attending nearby schools due to the suspect being contained to his home.

Moreira is set to be arraigned on Thursday.
