RIDEM closing part of Bristol Harbor to shellfishing due to sewage spill

BRISTOL, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said that a 458-acre portion of the western side of Bristol Harbor will be closing to shellfish harvest due to a sewage spill.
RIDEM said the closure begins at sunrise on March 9 and all waters north of a line extending from the southernmost tip of Usher Point in Bristol to the northernmost tip of Hog Island will be closed.
The closure will last until March 30.
RIDEM said rain over the last week resulted in an overflow of around 180,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into the harbor from the Bristol Wastewater Treatment Facility.
