Two men apprehended in ‘grandparent scam’

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The Warwick Police Department shared today that they were notified of a scam earlier this week that has been occurring frequently throughout the state.

On Friday morning, Warwick PD’s night detectives along with other specialized units began their investigation.

Around 2:00 p.m., detectives inside a residence observed a person walked up to the resident’s home who matched the description of a suspect who had recently been reported in a Coventry scam.

After the delivery was made, detectives took the suspect into custody.

Detectives conducting surveillance also apprehended the getaway driver.

Both suspects were taken into custody for Obtaining Property Under False Pretenses  and Conspiracy-Felony charges.

The suspects were identified as Jason Rhodes, 34, of Flushing, NY, and Robert Munoz, 29, of Miami, FL.

The court authorized a search warrant for a Warwick hotel room under Munoz’s name.

Detectives found evidence connecting the suspects to other “grandparent scams” and a large amount of money.

This is an active investigation. Detectives are looking at evidence to notify other victims.

This scam is being reported throughout Rhode Island.
