PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin is holding a day of prayer and penance Friday at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in response to recent clergy abuse findings.
This comes after a grand jury report in Pennsylvania found that hundreds of priests were sexually abusing children, while others helped to cover it up.
Providence Bishop Thomas Tobin previously worked in the Pittsburgh area.
Parishioners said Tobin admitted to knowing about what was going on, but told them he did not report it because it was not a part of his job duties.
When the Diocese originally announced Friday’s day of prayer, officials said Bishop Tobin would be available for comment.
Friday morning, the diocese changed their stance, saying the day should only focus on prayer.
