New law will require Providence-owned buildings to be carbon neutral by 2040

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence Mayor Brett Smiley will sign a law that will require all city-owned buildings in the capital city to be carbon neutral by 2040.

It’s all a part of the city’s shift to renewable energy, as the city will sign this law that will hope to end all fossil fuel use by 2040.

The ordinance will be signed into law later this morning at city hall by Mayor Brett Smiley, Councilor Sue Anderbois, Director of Sustainability Priscilla de la Cruz and other city leaders in Providence’s push for zero carbon emissions.

The ordinance is called the Energy Efficient and Carbon Neutral Goals Municipal Buildings, and it lays out how carbon neutrality in city buildings could help the city’s path to sustainability.

That includes guidelines for investments and maintenance in carbon neutral infrastructure, as well as exploring thermal energy networks and biofuels to maximize on site generation.

That signing into law happening at 11:15 a.m.
