Update: Warwick man accused of first-degree child abuse faces a judge
WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Warwick police arrested a man Saturday on charges of first degree child abuse after being alerted by a doctor at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Based on the investigation by Warwick detectives from the Special Victims’ Unit, the boy’s father, Gerardo Casillas, 43, was arrested and charged with first-degree child abuse.
According to the doctor, a male juvenile was admitted Friday with injuries all over his body, including his skull.
The doctor, alarmed by the injuries, contacted police and Casillas was arrested on Saturday at his Warwick home.
The child’s age and identity have not been released because he’s a juvenile.
Casillas was arraigned on charges of first-degree child abuse Tuesday and pleaded not guilty and is being held on $5,000 surety bail.
Casillas was ordered to remain no-contact with his son as the case ensues.
The charges carry a sentence of up to 20 years.
