Warwick police issue public warning about Citizen’s Bank scam

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — According to Warwick police, there’s been a recent uptick in scammers calling residents and pretending to be from Citizen’s Bank.

They are reportedly using the bank’s phone number so it comes up as “Citizen’s Bank” on the caller ID.

Banks and legitimate companies will not ask you to purchase gift cards or transfer money into crypto currency for payments, or to protect your funds.

If you feel something is suspicious, call the bank or yourself at the number on their website, or on the back of your debit card.

Citizen’s Bank released the following statement for customers:

The safety and security of our customers’ accounts is of utmost importance to us.  We monitor for unusual activity 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  If customers have any doubts about the validity of a communication or are experiencing a fraud issue, they should contact us at 1.800.922.9999 or the number on the back of their cards or statements. We also recommend that customers visit the extensive information we have available about security and fraud protection at: www.citizensbank.com/security/default.aspx.
