Bill proposes extended public process before closing schools

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island house education committee is considering a bill addressing the public process before announcing a school closure.

The bill was sponsored by representative David Morales, and was introduced in light of the announcement of the looming closure of 360 High School in Providence.

The proposal would require public school districts and the Rhode Island Department of Education to publicly announce their proposal of a school closure.

Within a week, the district would also be required to publicly share a report on facility conditions at the affected school, including the estimated cost to repair the building, and identification of possible uses of the building once it has been closed.

The bill would also require the district to share a contingency plan for affected students and staff, and transportation options.

The DOE would also be required to hold at least four public meetings within 35 days of the announcement.
