Cranston police identify carjacking suspect arrested in North Kingstown

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cranston Police Department have released additional details in a carjacking that occurred Friday morning on Pontiac Avenue.

20-year-old Matthew Figueroa Hernandez, of Providence, was charged with first degree robbery, assault on a person over 60 resulting in serious bodily injury, domestic simple assault and battery, and domestic disorderly conduct.

The initial call came in at 6:09 a.m. of an assault in progress, and multiple officers responded to the scene and encountered an elderly male suffering from multiple injuries from an apparent assault.

The victim, a 70-year-old man, was traveling down Pontiac Avenue when a male subject flagged him down, pulled him from his vehicle and violently assaulted him.

The suspect and a female subject fled the area in the stolen vehicle.

The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Hernandez was held without bail at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
